Obituary for Betty Jo Roberts

Betty Jo Roberts, 92, died Thursday, June 4, 2020 at Hilltop Manor in Cunningham, Kansas. She was born February 5, 1928 in Garden City, Kansas the daughter of J.R. & Laura (Hauser) Jones.

Betty Jo lived in Sublette, Kansas as a child. She moved with her family to Garden City where she lived most of her life. She graduated from Garden City High School, and in 1950 she proudly graduated from the University of Kansas. Betty Jo worked most of her life in public service. She worked as Administrative Assistant for Governor Robert Bennett and later ran Senator Nancy Kassabaum’s Regional office in Garden City.

Betty Jo served on numerous boards, had various memberships and volunteered in many areas, which include: University of Kansas Alumni Association Board of Directors, St Catherine Hospital Board, Garden City Library Board, Girl Scout Board, Finney County Historical Society Board, University of Kansas Development Committee, Kansas University Greater University Fund, KU Alumni Association, University of Kansas Chancellors Club, Treasurer of her Senior class at KU, member of Delta Gamma Sorority (President of DG’s her senior year) at KU, First United Methodist Church, Rotary, PEO Chapter FF, Salmagundi. She also Volunteered in many capacities in the past: March of Dimes, Red Cross, Southwest Community concert membership chairman, taught Sunday school, Library Story Hour, Chairman Finney County Republican Central Committee, Secretary for the State Republican Committee, Vice Chairman for first District Republican Committee, Alternate Delegate to the 1968 Republican National Convention. She is a member of the Garden City High School Hall of Fame. She loved the University of Kansas sporting events, Kansas City Royals, and the Chiefs. She also was an avid reader and played in several bridge clubs.

On August 31, 1951, she married Milton Roberts in Garden City. Milton died on October 21, 2000. She is also preceded in death by her parents and a daughter-in-law Sharon Roberts.

Survivors include two children Kurt Roberts of Garden City and Andrea & husband Greg Johnsrud of Pratt, Kansas; a brother Richard A. Jones of Wheeling, West Virginia; five grandchildren Dawn Williams, Laura Ballard, Josh Johnsrud, Ben Johnsrud, & Nate Johnsrud; and seven great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 10, 2020 at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City, Kansas with Rev. Joel Plisek officiating. The service may also be viewed via Facebook Live on the Garnand Funeral Home Facebook page. Friends may call from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, and from 9:00 a.m. to Noon on Wednesday all at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. The family suggests memorials given to the KU Endowment Association, or to Friends of Lee Richardson Zoo both in care of Garnand Funeral Home of Garden City.
